Using the assistant

Talk through a question, attach context you choose, and let the assistant act through the tools you enable.

Updated 12 October 2026

Dictation inserts text at the cursor. The assistant helps you work through a question and can act through tools you enable. Use an on-device model profile to keep the conversation on your Mac, or turn on optional Cloud Voice for spoken conversation.

Speak, follow up, act

Press and hold right ⌘ Command and ask your question out loud. The assistant answers in its panel. You can change the key in Shortcuts. Cloud Voice is a separate spoken conversation: once it is turned on, start one with ⌘⇧Space or the wave button in the assistant panel. With the relevant add-ons and permissions enabled, ask it to manage Herdr coding agents, adjust app settings, read local documents or work with boards and terminal panes.

Tool access is explicit. Some actions need further confirmation or dedicated settings; spoken conversation does not bypass them. The assistant never types into a terminal itself; to run something it starts a coding agent and asks it. Coding agents run with your privileges and the assistant instructs them without asking each time, so understand what you enable.

Context you choose

You can attach context so the assistant answers about something specific:

  • A screenshot of what is on screen. This needs the optional Screen Recording permission; see Install & permissions.
  • Clipboard text — whatever you last copied.
  • Your current selection — the text you have highlighted.

On-device model profiles process that input on your Mac; cloud profiles send the relevant input and tool results to their provider. Cloud Voice also sends your audio and the conversation to Google. Do not attach information you do not want that provider to receive.

Ask it to move windows

Turn on the Window Snap extension in Settings → Add-ons and the assistant can place windows for you: “put this window on the left” or “maximize this”. For the full story, see Put the browser on the left.

Ask it to change settings, or about your documents

With the settings tool allowed for your model in Settings → Add-ons, ask for a change in plain language, such as “turn off enhancement”.

Add documents in Settings → Your docs and allow the knowledge tool in Add-ons, and the assistant can answer from them. They are searched on your Mac. If you use a cloud model, the text it finds is sent to that provider with your question.

Settings and workspace

Use Settings search to find shortcuts, voice routing, model profiles and tool permissions. Boards and terminal/browser panes are part of the free app. Spot remains an optional companion; his presence or cosmetics do not improve model capability or tool access.

Account and voice costs

Clabrate is free with a verified email address, and the on-device features keep working offline afterward. Cloud Voice runs on your Clabrate account and uses credits: an account is given 30,000 free starting credits, once per email address and once per installation of the app. Your balance and usage show in Settings → Assistant. Top-ups cannot be bought yet, and Clabrate does not sell voice credits or subscriptions.
